One of the things that I love about functional

medicine is that we define six different forms of exercise. So many people think about cardio,

they think about weight training, they think about balance, they think about mind and body.

But one of the things that we don't talk about enough is just being able to

get out of bed clean your house go outside sweep some leaves which is called the activities

of daily living in your practice what have you learned about training people just to be able to get up and go?

I try to break down that topic into three different areas.

Everybody has a memory of what they could do in the past.

They could walk a mile or five miles. They could pick up their

grandkids, but they can't now. They could do, and you fill in the bank. My job is to help them

with ADLs so that the things they could do, they can start doing them again. My job is to help them with the activities

that they are currently doing, but they can do those things better. They are able to walk. They are

able to keep a job. They are able to do travel and all the things that are important to them,

but my job is to help them be able to do it

better. And thirdly, my job is to make sure that the ADLs of the future, the things that they

want to be able to do, they don't want to lose their capacity, they don't want to have age
