Summary

Welcome to Last Call, a look at the biggest stories Jim and Greg covered over the past week on the 3 Martini Lunch. This week, Jim was away and guest hosts included Inez Stepman of Independent Women, Hillsdale College Radio General Manager Scot Bertram, and radio and podcast host Craig Collins.

This week our biggest stories included Republican voters in Kentucky soundly defeating Rep. Thomas Massie, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass saying she wants to "explore" non-citizen voting, former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown dodging answers on ket issues as he tries to return to the Senate, and the weird congressional obsession with Daylight Saving Time.

First, Inez and Greg react to Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie losing decisively to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein. They also examine how Massie’s image shifted from principled libertarian conservative to a frequent obstacle to the broader GOP agenda.

Next, Scot and Greg chronicle Karen Bass saying she is willing to explore non-citizen voting in LA. Scot explains how the left's arguments about citizenship are wildly inconsistent. Greg believes the Democrats' goals on this issue are crystal clear.

Then, Craig and Greg get a good laugh out of former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, who was voted out of office in 2024 and running for U.S. Senate again this year, claiming he doesn't know enough about the issues to say whether he supports abolishing ICE or cutting off military aid to Israel.

Finally, Scot and Greg groan as the House of Representatives once again considers legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. Scot and Greg explain why this is a terrible idea, what the better permanent time would be, and what the best approach to our clocks really is.

And we begin with the conversation Annes and I had after Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massey was soundly defeated in his Republican primary.

0:28.3

Well, you usually don't look at massive political in terms of election news in the middle of May, but that's where we are.

0:33.9

It's primary season, of course, in this midterm election year.

0:36.6

And a lot of different primaries happened yesterday. Races in Georgia and Alabama for Senate and

0:43.2

governor and all sorts of other things. But we're going to start in Kentucky. It's also not

0:48.0

often that a single house race gets more national attention and becomes the most expensive house

0:53.0

race ever either.

0:54.3

But that's exactly what happened in Kentucky's fourth district because Thomas Massey,

0:58.1

who's been there quite a while, but has become almost the reliable no vote on the Republican

1:03.0

side in the House of Representatives on a lot of different issues was in the fight of his political

1:07.9

life against a challenger named Ed Galrine, who had the endorsement, of course, of President Trump.

1:13.6

Massey came to Washington a while ago,

1:15.4

and he was kind of the,

1:16.6

seemed like the successor of Ron Paul, Ennis,

1:19.3

and for a while he was, you know,

1:20.9

very tough on spending and debts,

1:23.5

and, like most libertarians,
