Summary

For International Nurses Day, we're revisiting our coverage of Mary Seacole. While, technically, she wasn't a nurse, she was very much a brave medical caregiver, a "doctress," an entrepreneur, and one heck of a jam-maker who served those fighting at the front of the Crimean War (and so much more.) If you are interested in a more directly related nurse episode, we recommend our coverage of Florence Nightingale (as well as several others, mentioned in this episode.)

There's also a movie in the works about the life of Mary Seacool. It was supposed to be released last year in 2020,

1:23.0

but obviously like a lot of things. It was delayed until this year, so we don't have a release date yet,

1:31.0

but it looks like it will be released in 2021 and we're very much looking forward to that.

The International Council of Nurses has given this as the theme for International Nurses Day this year.

Mary Seacool wasn't afraid of the open ocean or a blank slate. She went towards war rather than away from it

and walked through discrimination as if it weren't there. She wasn't even stopped by the terrifying force of the British bureaucracy.

Here's a bandage for you and a hug and have another drink. Won't you my son? Because Mother Seacool is going to make it all better.
