is Mary Nichols, the co-chair of the Coalition for Reimagined Mobility, and former chair of the California

Air Resources Board.

The timing is coincidental that Mary is joining us on the podcast this week, but I can think of no better time

because it was just last week that the federal government restored California's

authority to set its own emission standards for vehicles at levels that are more stringent than what federal law permits.

That waiver had been rescinded during the Trump administration and now it's back.

17 other states have traditionally followed California's lead on those standards.

So to say that this has important implications for the auto industry would be something of an understatement. One of the first things that I came to

understand when I started writing about and reporting on transportation, which was now many years ago,

was that as goes California, so goes the rest of the country.

And for many years, Mary Nichols led California's efforts on those efforts to get to zero tailpipe emissions. So we are going to talk to Mary

about her time-leading carb, what the current news means, and just as importantly,

discuss her current work with the Coalition for Re-imagined Mobility,
