On this program, Debbie Millman talks with Martin Vaneski

about his journey from a designer of coupons to one of the most innovative

designers of our time.

He also talks about what experimentation really is and about his use of unorthodox materials.

One thing I'm always trying to find is that connective tissue between the past and the present

and the impossibility of holding time still, and working with materials that do fall apart.

Here is Debbie Millman.

If Martin Beneski's graphic designs were a sound, it would be a rambunctious, jubilant parade.

Martin Vineski teaches at the California College of the Arts

and masterminds the design firm Appetite Engineers. He makes intricate cut and paste mashups of old school

typography, discarded ephemera, manipulated images, and tactile scraps that build and balance in a teetering mass that seems

to leap right off the page.

Fineski likes to think of his work as a busy urban intersection. His innovative use of type,

collage, and found materials have made him one of the great innovators in design, and his

influence runs deep.
