Summary

Peter and Afua return to uncover the far-reaching — and often unsettling — legacy of Martin Luther. From shaping Henry VIII’s England and Europe’s bloody religious wars to influencing education, nationhood, and even Nazi ideology, Luther’s impact is as complex as it is profound. A flawed revolutionary who changed the world — for better and for worse.

Hello and welcome to part two in our series on the legacy of Martin Luther.

0:06.1

Last time we looked at Luther's life and times and at the turbulence that were started to be

0:10.5

unleashed by the ambitious, argumentative and chaotic Martin Luther.

0:15.8

He was a man who didn't take no for an answer, who was completely convinced that his way of doing things

0:22.1

was right and that everyone else was wrong. That probably sounds pretty familiar to most of us

0:26.9

living in this age, and that the ends justified the means. He thrived on controversy and on

0:35.1

division. What a shame that he lived before the age of social media, Peter.

0:48.5

like. We didn't actually talk about this, but there are a lot of iconic images of Martin Luther,

0:53.5

mainly because of the work of

0:55.1

one artist Kranak, who painted him over and over again. So I think he would have had a strong

1:00.9

brand on Instagram. He would have used those portraits and then kind of blasted people with

1:06.5

reels. He would have put hymns on there. He would have been firing shots at his enemies. He would

1:11.8

have had a massive following. And then he would have rejected all the endorsement deals from

1:16.2

the indulgences brands because it wasn't aligned with his values. And that would have got him

1:21.7

even more followers. Anyway, we digress.

1:24.3

Washing up liquid. He'd have been selling household products. He'd have turned down the indulgences.

1:29.0

But this time we're going to look beyond Wittenberg and beyond Germany the 16th century

1:32.8

and to look at the legacy of Martin Luther and of Lutherism and some of the things he set

1:37.5

in motion because it is a completely extraordinary story that takes in everything from

1:42.7

migration to the United States, the rise of Hitler,
