He began painting in earnest in his

30s. Martin describes a pivotal moment at Paffa

when an instructor with a Cheshire cat grin

made a suggestion that ended up changing everything about Martin's paintings.

Martin talks about the domino effect in his work, how his paintings are almost premonitions of what his life will be and why it's so

important to paint something that truly scares you. Here's Martin campus.

Thank you for having me.

Was there an artist that you admired when you were young that inspired you to start painting yourself?

No, I didn't want to be an artist when I was younger.

I just wanted to drive big trucks.

Being an artist was nothing that I ever thought was anything. There weren't any artists where I'm from, but there were a lot of trucks that drove by our little community.

And so you wanted to go explore the world as a truck driver?

Yeah, it was just the beautiful sound and the shapes of them, which at that time I wasn't aware that I was being influenced by the aesthetics of them.

They had this power to them. I guess it helps to say that I grew up in a very tiny

little community in West Texas before I moved to New Mexico and we lived in a community of about 40 families in the middle of nowhere.

Oh wow very small. Yeah my father worked for a gas company they took the natural gas out of the ground and they would refine it and make it safe for utility companies to use

And so this community was based around these big machines that would push gas from one section of the country to

another.
