This is CBS I in the world behind the black Bob Zimmerman is here. I'm John Bachelor to Mars

To ingenuity to a photograph that's Bob this deserves a Christmas card what am I looking at?

0:16.4

Yeah I have a picture this is a picture I posted previously when they first discovered that ingenuity was no longer flyable it's a picture of ingenuity on a sand dune after that

0:25.6

a rough landing that broke at least one propeller. But the reason I posted the image again

0:30.8

was because this week engineers basically said goodbye to ingenuity.

0:35.2

Perfor instance is about to move out of range so they sent one last software update and

0:40.6

then a second to confirm the software update worked and now they're basically saying goodbye

0:45.6

person is off out of range and so there no communications through the engineer you can

0:50.1

all that can continue.

0:53.0

The last software update is interesting because what they've done is they've set

ingenuity to turn itself on every day, check its status, its sole panel will continue to collect data.

So there's no reason why it cannot turn it on every day.

picture of the ground even though the ground it's only one straight down but you

1:21.0

get a picture every day of that same spot and see if any changes

1:23.7

that but it's going to do this continuously and they think it can gather as much as

1:27.1

20 years worth of data daily over time and the idea of doing this is they figure that someday in the future

1:35.1

somebody's going to come by in a position to download that data and that'll give

1:40.5

them a fantastic long-term look at this one particular spot on Mars over time.

1:47.0

And so that's what they're doing.

1:48.0

So even though ingenuity is now gone, shut down, or at least it's not in communications anymore,
