a critic of Lyndon Johnson'sJohnson's Vietnam policies took 42% of the vote in New Hampshire's first

in the nation Democratic presidential primary.

The President of the United States got 48%.

A Harris poll indicated that anti-Johnson rather than anti-war

propelled McCarthy's near upset.

The New Hampshire results caught most political pundits unaware.
