Summary

Mark Coogan is an Olympian, earned silver in the marathon at the Pan-American Games, and was ranked top 10 in the U.S. from the mile to the marathon. As a coach, he’s produced Olympic and champion runners, including Abbey D’Agostino, who embodied sportsmanship and courage at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

In his new book, Personal Best: Coach Coogan’s Strategies for the Mile to the Marathon, he shares his formula for achieving your running goals. The key lies in establishing balance between your running and the rest of your life.

Thank you to Athletic Greens, Örlö, and Allbirds for sponsoring this episode.

Athletic Greens has created a movement around simplifying our health routine. AG1 is an easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. It promotes gut health with prebiotics, probiotics, and naturally occurring enzymes; supports your immune system with Vitamin C, zinc, healing mushrooms, and more; provides magnesium to boost energy; and it's packed with superfoods, adaptogens, and antioxidants to help recovery. It’s simple to make and it tastes good!

Just one scoop in a glass of water in the morning will ensure that even if your diet is less than ideal the rest of the day, you’ve gotten the nutrients you need. Go here to subscribe and you’ll get five free travel packs of AG1, and a free one year’s supply of vitamin D3+K2 with your subscription!

Örlö is the world’s most sustainable algae supplement. Algae is a potent source of EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to life. They help you take care of your brain health, heart health, and immune system, and your body absorbs them three times better than fish oil. They also don’t have that fishy aftertaste!

Örlö’s algae is grown in pristine water in Iceland using only green energy and they employ a carbon-negative production process. 99% less land and water resources are used, so you get 100% of the benefit with 0% of the guilt!

Allbirds looks at everything through a sustainability lens; it’s at the core of who they are as a company and the products they create. Their performance running shoe, the Tree Flyer, is lightweight, super springy, and wildly comfortable, and they’re Tina’s go-to running shoes. The Tree Dasher is not only a running shoe, it’s perfect for daily wear. You might also want to check out the Plant Pacers, made from plant leather.

Use this link, and you’ll get a free pair of socks! Just add them to your order, and when you use this link, it will take off the price at the end.

Hello my friends, welcome to episode 344 of the Running for Real Podcast. Thank you for joining me

0:53.2

today. I'm excited that you are here and excited to introduce you to a guest who I probably

0:59.7

should have had on a longer time ago. We've been friends for many years now. He is the coach

1:05.5

at Team New Balance Boston. He sent three athletes to the 2021 Olympics and was also on the 1996

1:13.1

Olympic marathon team himself. He used to coach at Dartmouth and won the silver medal in the

1:18.7

marathon at the 1995 Pan American Games. There's so much more I could give you in terms of his

1:24.7

credentials for things that he has done, but I am excited to have him here today to talk about

1:30.6

his book, which is called Personal Best Running, Coach Cougan Strategies for Marl to the marathon,

1:35.2

because obviously he not only was successful himself but has been a very successful coach,

and Mark has been a friend for many years as I mentioned, so we also can go beyond just the general

1:46.3

chit chat and you get to hear a bit more of an intimate conversation between two friends. I think

1:51.6

you're really going to enjoy this episode. We talk a lot about training. This is more of a tips advice,

1:58.4

kind of learning about your running episode compared to the episodes that we typically do,

2:03.1

which are a little more on the personal side of things. So without any further ado, let's get to

2:08.0

this episode with Mark Cougan. Thank you to AG1 from Athletic Greens for sponsoring the running
