introduce you to one of the real characters of the Scottish mountain scene Dave heavy

Wally one of the founder members of the RAF Mountain Rescue team

and just all round good bloke. I think you'll enjoy it. It's very definitely the end of autumn now. The deer grass has gone russet brown, the

blossoms coming off the heather, you get these little explosions of yellow on the hillside

where there are birch or larch and the leave will be off them soon. Quite a dark sky too,

it's overcast and there's a definite chill in the air. I'm Mark Stephen, he's Ewan McElwraith, and we're in the car park at the foot of Ben Wevis,

waiting for a man, and I think it's fair to say we have known most of our professional careers.

It's kind of drifted out and out with many pieces done in the mountains, but the more we met him, the more information you got. He's a quiet, unassuming man.

But the more you hear from other people, he's been involved in every major incident

in the Scottish mountains and the hills for the last three decades.

He's a truly impressive man.

His nickname's Heavy.

Most people know him as heavy, but his real name is David Whaley.

What struck it for me the first time I was up on Cairngorm, as we're going up the hill, everybody's going, I have, how heavy, I've been up in Ben A and we got taken off by helicopter and ferocious conditions.

As you're going up the hill, same again, everybody knows him.

He's been influential in so much of Scottish mountain rescue.
