Summary

Hello Europe! Your favourite continental podcast is back with everything from salted snails to middle-fingered salutes on the menu. Dominic's been walking on thin ice and Katy's been cocooning; there's good news for Angela Merkel and bad news for press freedom in Slovakia. Eckard Helmers is on the line from Germany to explain why Europe fell in love with diesel cars even though they're poisoning our air. And we're talking English — literally — with Marko Modiano, a linguistics expert in Gävle, Sweden, about how the language is taking on a life of its own in Europe. Hello listeners and welcome to another episode of the Europeans with me, Dominic, speaking to you from Amsterdam and my wonderful co-host Katie Lee in Paris.

0:25.9

No, not in Paris. I'm in London this week.

0:27.8

Oh, well, how am I meant to know? Is it Skype?

0:30.3

It's nice here. It's very cold, much like the rest of Europe.

0:33.0

Yeah, is it nice there? My family have been like moaning and groaning about how horrible it is in London at the moment.

0:38.3

There's still some bits of snow on the ground in places. I flew into Luton Airport yesterday and it was very snowy and my glasses got really fogged up.

0:44.3

Oh, poor you.

0:45.3

Which was not very glamorous. It is thawing out, which is nice because it has been freezing cold across the entire continent.

0:51.3

I think you've had like proper frozen canals and stuff in

0:54.2

Amsterdam. Oh, it's been amazing. Although I have mainly been locked inside a windowless building,

1:00.3

but when they occasionally let me out, I mean, I must clarify, I'm not imprisoned. I am just

1:05.3

working really hard at the moment in an opera house. And yeah, but I did manage to go out yesterday

1:09.9

afternoon and have a little wander

1:11.9

on the ice while my husband and his father were skating beautifully with the Rijks Museum in the

1:18.3

distance with all those paintings of people skating in the 18th and 19th century. It felt very

1:24.6

romantic. Wow. But you didn't get on the actual skates yourself. How come?

1:28.6

Because of your bad experiences with winter sports. Yeah. I mean, it was only six weeks ago. I broke my

1:32.8

shoulder skiing with the same two people. And I thought having another adventurous experience with

1:39.0

skates was not a good idea. Walking was scary enough for me. What was it like walking on the ice?

1:43.3

Could you hear like cracking under your feet and stuff?

1:45.0

It was so amazing.

1:46.0

The noise of the skates on the ice is so beautiful.
