Summary

This month on Mannhunting, Alex and Rob are tackling Public Enemies, Michael Mann's dramatization of the FBI manhunt for notorious Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. The film touches on the fascist sympathies of FBI founder J. Edgar Hoover and the prologue to the modern surveillance state. But fundamentally Public Enemies is about a bank robber and the way he is hunted and eventually cornered. In that story Rob finds a lot to love, but Alex sees a thematic muddle and doubtful execution of every idea. Like Dillinger and the FBI, they just have to settle this with a shootout.

1:58.0	crime fighting that established the FBI's reputation as an elite
2:01.4	law enforcement agency that jadger Hoover rode into a lifetime of
2:05.8	political power and influence.
2:08.5	The story of public enemy seems, uh, then like it might be the
2:12.7	familiar master cop versus master criminal framework that is such
2:16.3	a favorite of mans, except that's not really what public enemies
2:21.4	turns out to be instead in place in, in places it is like a more
2:26.5	kinetic, uh, the assassination of Jesse Jesse James by the coward
2:30.3	Robert Ford, in which over the course of more than two hours, you
2:33.5	watch the news Titan on Dillinger and the entire class of criminal
