Brian Lairor on WNYC, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is with us now.

He's well into his second term as Manhattan's DA.

He came into office, as many of you will remember, amid fierce criticism that his

policies would make the city less safe. Here's a little of where things stand. Through the first

four months of this year, murders in New York City were at their lowest level in recorded history.

76 homicides citywide, quote, shattering the previous record of 86, said in

2018, that's according to the NYPD.

In Manhattan specifically, for the first three months of the year, murder was down more than

44 percent compared to the first three months of last year.

Last year, Bragg what he thinks is behind those fallen crime rates and about the work still

left to do on crime.

But we should say public safety isn't the only part of what Bragg's office is supposed to do.

Last week he asked a court to vacate a murder conviction that his own office, obviously

not him but a predecessor, had one decades earlier, one that sent a man named Harry Ruiz to prison for 25 years for a 1993 shooting.

The request followed findings by the office's post-conviction review unit, good that there is such a unit,

that testimony in the case may have been

secured through payments to a witness's family that were never disclosed to the defense.

Meanwhile, Bragg's office is pushing meta. We mentioned this on yesterday's show.
