Summary

In Episode #58, I sat down with one of the pioneers of lifestyle medicine, Dr Neal Barnard, to break down the process by which people become insulin resistant and how we can eat to avoid or even reverse type 2 diabetes. Neal covers his clinical experience with type 2 diabetes, the clinical trials on type 2 diabetes and nutrition he has run and published, how Atkins/ketogenic/low-carb diets can affect type 2 diabetes, and – importantly – the idea of reversing type 2 diabetes We also cover plenty of other interesting topics, such as cheese and disease, carbohydrates and sugar (thermic effect), intramyocellular lipids, coconut and palm oil, calcium as an important nutrient, and much more! numbers. This is no doubt my fault, as I've always felt a little weird about asking you

0:12.2

to do something for me. But clearly, if you don't ask, you don't get. So if you're enjoying

the show, if it's providing you value, please take 30 seconds and leave a review on Apple

to attract the brightest and most trustworthy people in science. My team and I have big

0:32.3

plans for the show where we want to be in 24 months and we need your help to make this

possible.

And so the way we do it is we'll say, all right, here's why a vegan diet or a plant-based

0:44.5

diet, whatever word you want to use, is good. And let's take a week. Let's not start

0:48.0

the diet today. And during this week, let's think of the foods that you might like to have

0:51.8

for breakfast or lunch or dinner that have no animal products in them. They come back

0:55.9

at seven days later. They got their whole list. Now the doctor says, let's eat those foods

1:00.0

that you picked out. For the next 21 days, three weeks, all vegan all the time, but it's

1:03.8

the foods you like. Hey, okay, easy. I can do anything for three weeks and these are the

1:06.7

foods I like. So they eat it and three weeks goes by. Physically, they are changing. They're

1:11.4

losing weight. They're feeling better. If they got diabetes, their blood sugar is starting

1:14.1

to fall. Their digestion is finally sorted out. But the other thing is their attitudes

1:18.4

about foods and their taste for foods are changing too. They didn't expect that because

1:22.1

you didn't try to talk them out of skepticism. After three weeks, they just think, can I

1:26.0

do this for another week? Of course, you couldn't pay them to go back and have a cheeseburger.
