After completing his dark Cold War comedy, Dr. Strangelove, filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, decided his next movie would be the, quote, proverbial good science fiction movie.

Over the next few years, Kubrick slowly, meticulously and methodically

worked on a story with writer Arthur C. Clark, a huge, ambitious journey through time and space,

exploring human evolution, extraterrestrial life, and man's relationship with technology.

When 2001 a space odyssey was finally released in 1968,

the world didn't quite know what to make of it.

Some believed it to be a masterpiece while others were baffled, confounded,

and bored by this cold, barren, slow-paced art-house film.

Over 50 years later, audiences are still divided by 2001,

but it's now generally recognized to be not just Kubrick's masterpiece,

but one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.

The film with which all subsequent movies that deal with space travel,

aliens and the dangers of AI are compared.
