Today I have the pleasure of speaking with artist, writer, and speaker, Makoto Fujimura.

He has had numerous museum exhibits and has served as an international advocate for the arts

as a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003 to 2009.

and not only because I've admired his art, writing, and speaking for years, as I'm sure many

of you listening to this podcast have, but because I think what he speaks about in this book is

especially timely. Welcome, Mako. Thanks for being here. I'm grateful. To begin with, would you

share with us a bit about your journey as an artist? Is there a moment or two that stands out as being

particularly formative for you?

I speak about this in the book, I think.

My mother kept this painting that I did when I was two and a half or three.

We were in Sweden at the time.

I was born in Boston.
