Summary

On Sunday, Jerry West became the first person inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and contributor. West, who passed away in June of this year, left behind a legacy as a player, coach, executive, and is known for literally being the logo of the NBA. But he was also known for his obsessive pursuit of greatness, one that often left him incapable of enjoying the fruits of his labor. Today, ESPN senior writer Baxter Holmes details the impact that the feud between West and the Los Angeles Lakers left on the basketball great’s life. Learn more about your ad choices. Baxter Holmes you've done a bunch of deep dives at ESPN and you've been on this

0:04.5

program before with other stories but in this case how did you come to have a

0:08.7

series of conversations with Jerry West?, I knew Jerry probably from back in 2009 when I was with the LA Times as a sports reporter,

That's a good question and I'm not sure I really know the answer to it.

1:00.0

I wish I could ask him.

1:01.0

You know, as you mentioned at the top,

1:02.6

I tend to do deep dives and talk to people

1:05.6

quite a bit on various stories.

1:07.5

I'd like to say that he and I spoke

1:09.7

because I had kind of showed through my work

1:12.2

that I enjoyed writing challenging complex stories

1:16.9

and I think he recognized that. But I think he talked to me in part because he was really interested in the Lakers and you know that was a

1:27.0

subject that I covered as a beat reporter for us initially and then later on was doing kind of deep dives into the organization
