France. Two American soldiers, a corporal and a private, are meant to be keeping watch by the side of a country road.

But the private sits on a crate instead, reading a magazine with his gun resting by his side,

while the older corporal checks his watch over and over.

The Great War has killed 14 million people over the last four years, but at last it's coming

to an end.

At dawn this morning the Germans signed an armistice agreement.

They're surrendering and the guns on the Western Front are due to fall silent at 11 a.m.

But until then the fighting goes on and men will keep dying.

The corporal has no intention of being one of them.

He turns to the private.

All right, come on, put that away and concentrate.

The other soldier puts down his magazine.

Sorry, sir, I just don't know what else to do.
