I remember actually studying the family proclamation in depth for the first time when I became a mom.

Even though the proclamation had come out when I was a teenager, it suddenly felt

a lot more important when I had kids of my own. I felt really inspired as I read the words

of this beautiful document, but one section really stuck out to me. Successful marriages and

families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance,

forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.

Sign me up for that last part.

I am an outdoor enthusiast, and so I latched onto that phrase.

My husband and I love taking our kids into the mountains to hike or to fish or camp or have

bonfires.

And this gives us the perfect excuse to do that even more.

And we have so much fun when we do these activities.

Well, at least my husband and I do.

After a while of doing this, we discover that some of our kids don't like the outdoors that much.

And so my husband and I started thinking about what other wholesome recreational activities our kids would want to do.

We still go out in nature a lot, but we also build puzzles and play board games, and we've even learned how to play Minecraft.

It turns out that successful families aren't built by doing only the recreational activities

mom and dad want to do. There is a bit of give and take that might even include some Minecraft.

So the takeaway of the day in Five Ridge or Less is make space for everyone's ideas.
