How long could you go without hearing from a loved one?

Your father, mother, sister, brother, hours, days, weeks, years? Most of us can't go a few hours without a text or a phone call. And what if they were abroad and it was unclear when or if they would make it home? How long before you are overtaken by anxiety?

And then by despair, by the lack of communication.

During World War II, this had become the reality for over 7 million U.S. soldiers fighting

in Europe.

Their letters and packages from those back home

had not made it to them. They had long been abandoned, unsorted, and expiring in sacks

stuffed in warehouses by the overwhelmed hands that tried but failed to distribute them.

Luckily for these soldiers, things were about to change, and the 6,88th, 888th Central Postal

Directory Battalion were on their way.

The 6,88th Central Postal Directory Battalion, or the 6th-8 for short, was a unique battalion on a

one-of-a-kind mission.

They were tasked with bringing mail and morale back to United States troops and their families.

But their presence complicated things for the U.S. military.
