Good evening, children.

It's Granny Maduff, ready with a story.

So make yourselves comfy, and I'll begin. Once upon a time, there lived a snowman.

Well, though he did live, he had been built by children. Two girls, Sophie and Maggie, lived in a house with their mother and their brother, Tristan.

They had just arrived in this new town.

They had lost their father the year before, and mother wanted to move back to her hometown.

So they loaded up the carriage and left the city for the country.

After the first snow had fallen, of which there was quite a bit, the children put on their boots and coats, then their scarves and hats

and mittens and went outside. How crisp the air was! They ran around. They had a snowball fight.

They made snow angels. It was magical. Then mother came outside with a basket.

Who wants to build a snowman? she cried. We do, replied the children. They packed and rolled three snowballs, each one bigger than the other.

Then they used the contents of the basket, two dates for his eyes, one big red button for his

nose, pebbles for his mouth, a black silk top hat to go on his head

and a scarf for around his neck

Mr Snowman we love you

said the children

and they danced all around him
