President Donald Trump says the U.S. is, quote, in charge of Venezuela.

His comment follows a military raid in the country on Saturday in which President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured and flown to New York City.

Maduro is set to make his first court appearance this afternoon, where he faces drug and weapons

charges.

Despite Trump's claim that the U.S. is running Venezuela, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had

slightly different messaging and interviews yesterday.

This is what he said to NBC News.

Well, it's not running the policy.

The policy with regards to this, we want Venezuela to move in a certain direction because

not only do we think it's good for the people of Venezuela, it's in our national interest.

Venezuela's Vice President Delci Rodriguez is currently the acting president of the country.

She's called for, quote, cooperation with the U.S.,

striking a somewhat softer tone despite condemning the ousting of Maduro. Here's CNN's Kevin Liptack.

This is not, you know, a U.S. occupation of Venezuela akin to what we saw in Iraq. This is

really more of a coercion campaign.

The US really relying on the leverage it thinks it has on the remnants of the Maduro regime

to essentially do what the United States tells them to do.
