The rumors and leaks were spot on. Apple Pay has launched in the United Kingdom.

Apple Insider says the service went live on Tuesday with 250,000 stores and eight banks participating. Financial institutions in the band include

American Express First Direct, H.S.B.C. Nationwide, Nat West, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, Ulster Bank, Visa, and MasterCard.

Participating retailers include Boots, Waitros, Pratt, and Transport for London.

They expect many excited people to purchase many small ticket items to start.

Quoting the report, Apple Pay Vice President Jennifer Bailey confirmed current point of sale

terminal software is capable of

processing low-cost transactions without verification, though purchases above 20 pounds will need software

upgrades.

Once merchants decide to update their POS systems, the limit is expected to rise to 30 pounds in September.

One assumes that POS means point of sale in this case.

It's been nine months since people in the States had the initial thrill of paying for things without

whipping out the paper or plastic.
