Apple will have hosted members of the media at its campus in Cupertino

California to announce new things and other things.

We'll be able to talk about those devices and who knows, maybe services.

Will there be a musical act? If so, did we like them? Do we get a clear look at where

Apple's going? Or was this event just a way station? An oasis of product between one fall

event and another.

Eight days from now, that will be the news world in which we live.

Between now and then, like it or not, the newsiest news is the continuing standoff between tech and government officials over

encryption and privacy and security and security.

Security and security are two different things by the way depending on who's saying it and when

perhaps one of the harshest bits of rhetoric tossed out by Apple against the

FBI and the DOJ and their attempts to get Apple to write software that will bypass the security on the San Bernardino

iPhone 5S is that it could lead to a police state.

That's how Fortunes Philip Elmer DeWitt says Apple has described the potential for the situation in one of its filings.

That sounds particularly incendiary.

The thing is, part of the DOJ's filing last week, also makes it sound accurate in Elmer DeWitt's opinion.
