Summary

Lucy Charles is a 24-year old professional triathlete who has literally burst onto the scene, seemingly out of nowhere, and is being called the next great female triathlet.  Previously a high level swimmer in the UK, she made her triathlon debut in 2014 as an amateur, winning her age group in Kona in 2015.  She subsequently turned pro and has been shocking the world ever since. Charles won Ironman Lanzalote in 2017, she came second place to Daniela Ryf in the 2017 World Ironman Championship, with a personal best time of 8:59:48, and she won the Ironman African Championship in April 2018. Will she be able to unseat Ryf at Kona in 2018?

On this episode of the Triathlon Taren podcast, Taren and Lucy chat about her unexpected, meteoric rise to fame as a pro triathlete, the fact Daniela Ryf is considered impossible to beat, and how she got into triathlon in the first place.

What's up Trainiacs? Today's podcast is brought to you by two sponsors. The first one is our pals at New Wave Swim Boy.

And I want to tell you a little bit of a story. As I've mentioned before, I was a little bit skeptical of New Wave Swim Boy when they first came to us and said they wanted to sponsor the podcast because I was a fairly confident open water swimmer.

0:21.8

But I tried it out. And what I found is that instantly boats were a long way away. So last week, I went out and I went

0:29.3

to the spot that I normally swim, very safe typically, but there was a dragon boat festival going on.

0:34.5

So I went down the river a fair bit, but I didn't know how far the dragon

0:38.7

boats were coming down the river. Fortunately, NTK, I had my new wave swim buoy. So I swam just

0:47.1

completely confidently, wasn't really sighting, looking around. And I had that confidence because of the New Wave Swim Boy and all the times

0:56.3

that I had gone out before where people said, you know, we could see it as far as about a mile

1:00.1

away. Which is good because those dragon boats come zipping by and they can't really stop.

1:05.5

Oh, they're chugging. Oh, yeah. They're chugging. So I've been a big fan of New Wave Swim Boy, even though I'm a confident swimmer.

1:13.4

I know it's a huge, huge help to people who aren't confident in open water.

1:16.8

Apparently, some clubs in Europe have told me that you are an idiot and not allowed in the club if you don't show up with your own New Wave swim boy.

1:26.8

And the folks at New Wave have told me

1:29.0

that there are clubs that order dozens and dozens of these things. It's like, I don't know,

1:33.6

it's like a pole boy, basically. Like they are so common there that, yeah, it's a legit thing.

1:39.9

Well, and it's cool to that aspect of being able to actually, it's a dry bag or a wet bag, dry bag.

1:45.6

Dry bag.

1:45.9

A dry bag.

1:46.5

So you can put your phone in there, you can put your keys in there, you can put whatever you want and have it with you while you're swimming.

1:51.4

And literally it stays completely dry, which is a really cool thing.

1:55.6

You don't have to leave your stuff on shore and risk having it, you know, getting stolen or something walking over it or I don't know,

2:01.6

whatever.
