Cody Beals is one of the hottest professional triathletes on the circuit right now, notching wins at Ironman Mont Tremblant (beating favourite Lionel Sanders in that race) and Ironman Chattanooga in 2018. Based out of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Cody found his way to competing as a pro in 2014, having a top five finish at Ironman 70.3 Muskoka as his final age group race of 2013.
On today's episode of the Triathlon Taren podcast, Taren and NTK talk to Cody not just about his sudden rise in the triathlon ranks (and beating Lionel in MT!) but about his passion for home renovations, his interest in alternate currencies and sharing his finances on a popular annual blog post. being a "nerd in jock's clothing" and his decision to be more open about being the only openly gay male triathlete competing professionally today.

0:00.0 | What's up Trainiacs? Today's podcast is brought to you by two sponsors. The first one is our pals at New Wave Swim Boy. |
0:08.0 | And I want to tell you a little bit of a story. As I've mentioned before, I was a little bit skeptical of New Wave Swim Boy when they first came to us and said they wanted to sponsor the podcast because I was a fairly confident open water swimmer. |
0:21.8 | But I tried it out. And what I found is that instantly boats were a long way away. So last week, I went out and I went |
0:29.3 | to the spot that I normally swim, very safe typically, but there was a dragon boat festival going on. |
0:34.5 | So I went down the river a fair bit, but I didn't know how far the dragon |
0:38.7 | boats were coming down the river. Fortunately, NTK, I had my new wave swim buoy. So I swam just |
0:47.1 | completely confidently, wasn't really sighting, looking around. And I had that confidence because of the New Wave Swim Boy and all the times |
0:56.3 | that I had gone out before where people said, you know, we could see it as far as about a mile |
1:00.1 | away. Which is good because those dragon boats come zipping by and they can't really stop. |
1:05.5 | Oh, they're chugging. Oh, yeah. They're chugging. So I've been a big fan of New Wave Swim Boy, even though I'm a confident swimmer. |
1:13.4 | I know it's a huge, huge help to people who aren't confident in open water. |
1:16.8 | Apparently some clubs in Europe have told me that you are an idiot and not allowed in the club if you don't show up with your own New Wave swim boy. |
1:26.8 | And the folks at New Wave have told me |
1:29.0 | that there are clubs that order dozens and dozens of these things. It's like, I don't know, |
1:33.6 | it's like a pole boy, basically. Like they are so common there that, yeah, it's a legit thing. |
1:39.9 | Well, and it's cool to that aspect of being able to actually, it's a dry bag or a wet bag, dry bag. |
1:45.6 | Dry bag. |
1:45.9 | A dry bag. |
1:46.5 | So you can put your phone in there, you can put your keys in there, you can put whatever you want and have it with you while you're swimming. |
1:51.4 | And literally it stays completely dry, which is a really cool thing. |
1:55.6 | You don't have to leave your stuff on shore and risk having it, you know, getting stolen or something walking over it or I don't know, |
2:01.6 | whatever. |
