Summary

Lucy Bartholomew is an ultrarunner from Australia. She started ultrarunning at only 15 years old and has admittedly always been compelled to break the mold. Now 24, she's one of the top racers in the world with wins and top performances at some of the sport's most important events. Of course, it hasn't been easy or without challenge and Lucy does a great job of honestly talking though the highs and lows of being a pro athlete. Recently, Lucy set an FKT on the Larapinta Trail --  a 138 mile trail in central Australia. I hope you enjoy this conversation!

Hey, everyone. Thank you for being here. Welcome to Pillars. Of course, I am Dylan Bowman,

0:19.8

and this week I am thrilled to bring you a

0:22.6

conversation with my friend, the great Lucy Bartholomew. For those who listen to this show,

0:29.6

for most of you, Lucy will probably need no introduction. She is one of the most well-known

0:36.1

and well-followed athletes on the circuit.

0:39.3

But for those who are unfamiliar, Lucy is an Australian ultra-runner, as you'll be able to tell by her amazing accent.

0:48.3

And she has just an incredible story.

0:51.3

She is an outlier in a sport that is just filled with outliers. She famously

0:58.8

did her first ultramarathon when she was only 15 years old, running 100 kilometers side

1:04.9

by side with her dad in their home country of Australia, and now still only 24 years old, turning 25 next month.

1:14.9

Lucy is a seasoned veteran, having been in the sport for almost a decade.

1:20.3

And it's just been amazing to witness her growth in that time.

1:24.2

She went from being a strong, young athlete with a lot of potential to an absolutely

1:30.1

world-class talent with wins and podium performances at some of the world's most important races.

1:38.4

But of course, as is always the case for high achieving people, living out their dreams. It really has not been

1:47.7

without consequences. For Lucy, she has admittedly been through a really tough couple of years

1:55.1

where she questioned whether she still had what it took or even the desire to keep chasing her career as an ultra-runner.

2:05.9

But she's been able to navigate it really well.

2:08.3

We talk at length about that process.

2:10.4

And just a few weeks ago, Lucy tackled her biggest challenge yet, the 138 mile Larapinta Trail in Central Australia.

2:22.4

And as you'll hear, it really did push her to her absolute limit.

2:27.1

We talk a lot about that.
