Hey everyone, I'm Dr. Allison. Today's scripture offers us a wiser way of being human as we step into the day.

0:11.9

As the week comes to a close, today's passage invites us to consider something many of us struggle to discern,

0:18.0

especially when we care deeply about others. What is ours to carry and what is not?

0:23.6

Today's reading comes from Galatian 6, 2 through 5. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will

0:30.7

fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive

1:10.1

especially in faith communities, where

1:11.8

love is often equated with self-sacrifice without limit. But Paul isn't contradicting himself here.

1:18.6

He's making a distinction. In the original language, the word translated burdens refers to

1:23.8

something heavy, overwhelming, or crushing, something no one should have to carry alone.

1:29.9

The word translated load refers to a pack, a responsibility, something assigned to one person to

1:36.9

carry. In other words, Paul is saying it this way. We are meant to help one another with what is

1:42.2

too heavy to bear alone.

1:44.6

And we are also meant to carry our own responsibilities.

1:49.2

Boundaries live in that distinction.
