Summary

Hannah Watkins was born into ‘the Move’ of God and spent her first 18 years in the organization. Led by Sam Fife, the group separated itself as a branch of the Baptist Church in the late 60’s. Luckily, Hannah’s experience was not physically invasive, but all the same, damaging to her emotionally with extreme doses of spiritual guilt. Most members were drawn in by the group’s return to a simple homesteading lifestyle where they could focus on reaching ‘holiness’. All members, male and female, were encouraged to speak freely about their sins and how they feel. However, when the women in her commune came together to preserve a tradition they valued they were rebuked for having a voice. In the time since Hannah has left, she has learned to value the sense of family and community she was raised in while also seeing how dangerous extreme adherence can be. She has moved away from these restrictive religious beliefs and advocates awareness of their effects, especially for young girls. Stay tuned, Before You Go: Rachel talks about how misogyny and victim-blaming contribute to one another-- and solutions for creating an environment where abuse can be addressed productively. Hannah was born into the move of God, and she spent the first

religious beliefs can be, especially for young girls.

0:46.5

She talks about that in particular in her first interview and also in the second part

She's somebody who was in touch with me after hearing the podcast and she was sharing some of

1:14.8

her story and I thought this would be wonderful if she would be on. So Hannah, I'm very happy

1:21.2

that you're taking the time today to share your story. You had a lot of great insights because of

1:26.5

your experiences, but also what you

1:29.3

needed after you left, what was difficult, what skills you needed to build, and kind of what you

1:35.6

want people to know so they can learn from your experience, and especially a message to girls and to

1:42.9

women. So let's get cooking with you just introducing yourself, and then we'll go from there.

My name is Hannah, and I was born into the move of God, also known as Move of the Spirit,

which was sort of, I think of it as a revivalist sort of movement that started in the 70s.

By the time I was born into it, we were living in log cabins in northern BC.

And I've just, in different points of my life, searched for other people who experienced what I did and I found your podcast

and found a lot of community just listening to the people that you have been interviewing.
