It's 1 a.m. on Thursday, May the 9th, 2019. A pale moon hangs over the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The ferns and palm fronds of Makawa Forest are bathed in an ethereal silver glow.

But for Amanda Ella, a young woman stumbling through this vast tropical woodland, the beauty doesn't register.
