Summary

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on prayer, as we celebrate the National Day of Prayer. St. Peter outright asked the Master of the universe, “Lord, teach us now to pray!” And that is precisely what the Lord Jesus did (see Luke 11:1-11). While the Prayer of Jesus must never be regarded as a prayer mantra, it is a prayer manner, beginning with the glorious privilege of addressing the Creator of the universe as “Father.” The prayer is a means by which we may step out of the shallow tide pool of our hearts and plunge into an unbounded ocean of uncreated energy. A means by which we may transcend surface things and experience union with God. The Prayer of Jesus provides the doorway into an ever-deepening experience with the divine. Genuine prayer is not found in our noisy askings and gettings; it is experiencing intimacy with the Lover of our souls. Submersion into the divine nature. And our precious Lord provided the archetypal entreaty for doing that very thing.

Today is the National Day of Prayer.

0:27.6

And so I have a question for you.

0:30.6

Do you want to know how to pray?

0:34.0

St. Peter most certainly did.

0:35.9

In fact, he outright asked the master of the universe,

0:40.8

Lord, teach us now to pray. And that is precisely what Jesus did. He taught his disciples a prayer

0:50.7

that is deftly divided into two parts. The first, well, the first is focused on God's

0:59.1

glory. And thus we pray, hallow it be thy name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done. And then the second is focused on our requests. Give us today our daily

1:15.6

bread everything necessary to sustain us, body and soul. Forgive us our trespasses as we also

1:24.9

have forgiven those who trespass against us, which is a daily acknowledgement

1:31.5

of the infinite price that was paid so that we might be forgiven, and lead us not into temptation,

1:40.3

but deliver us from the evil one.

1:44.4

The last petition, a reminder that God is in control of all things, and that includes the temptations

1:53.9

of Satan.

1:55.6

While our enemy most certainly prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

2:03.9

He is, after all, a lion on a leash, the length of which is determined by our Lord.

2:12.3

Jesus made every word count.

2:16.5

And so the prayer he taught his disciples to pray is to us a treasure of

2:22.6

immense value, value that can never be fully comprehended or calculated. The words beckoned those snorkeling with burnt backs to descend into its

2:40.7

glorious depths, for their await unfathomed resources and riches that can scarcely be described to

2:49.0

those merely paddling on the surface.
