I welcome Joseph Sternberg, he is the Wall Street

Journal Editorial Board, he is also the political economics columnist for the

journal, he's based in London, and this is a different system profoundly than the American system so it requires

some attention to detail.

Joe, the election is called by the Prime Minister.

It is called for July 4th, striking date when you consider

what the Americans make of July 4th. In any event, that gives X number of weeks, I now count 37 days to the election.

The success of this is that it doesn't go on for years and cost a billion dollars.

The limitations are that both sides must display their ambitions, their campaign promises.

However, in your most recent column, you make it very clear that not only does the public already know about these parties and their leaders,

but also that we're moving into a stage of not paying much attention.

Joe, is this an exciting election, a comical election, a tragic election?

How is it portrayed in Britain?

This campaign is already becoming something between a laugh and a snooze

depending on who you ask and the precise time of day you ask them so you're you're absolutely right that you know under the British

system they do have to have an election at least every five years so we knew one

was coming very late this year or January 2025 at the absolute latest. But there is a

certain amount of discretion for Prime Minister to decide it within that

five-year window when he will call an election.
