Balancing Logic and Emotion in Investment Decisions
In this episode of Dividend Cafe, recorded from Newport Beach, the discussion revolves around the impact of human psychology on investment decisions. David delves into the importance of balancing logic (logos) and emotion (pathos) in managing a diverse investment portfolio, touching on systematic and non-systematic risks. The conversation also covers recent market dynamics and geopolitical events, emphasizing that current market behaviors are more about valuation than geopolitical tensions. The episode concludes with speculative insights on the economic implications of the Ukraine conflict and potential investment opportunities in rebuilding efforts. | 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dividing Cafe weekly market commentary focused on dividends in your portfolio and dividends in your understanding of economic life. |
| 0:12.0 | Well, hello, welcome to this week's Dividendon Cafe. It is so nice to be recording from the studio here in the Newport Beach office back in this saddle and ready |
| 0:23.0 | to talk to you a little bit today about logic, emotion, and the market. And there are a few |
| 0:29.7 | other things that need to dovetail with the overall conversation. Let me just get the fun stuff |
| 0:35.4 | out of the way. I want to go to a couple different topics here |
| 0:38.4 | in the sort of second half of our time together, but off the top, I want to talk about the concept |
| 0:45.7 | of a balanced portfolio and what that means in terms of our human nature, where our human nature |
| 0:53.7 | can get in the way. And I am reminded in preparing |
| 0:58.9 | what I wrote this week that human nature is at the heart of what we do in managing investors, |
| 1:06.5 | that human beings naturally have a logical and rational side, what we refer to as the Lagos, |
| 1:15.0 | and human beings have emotions. |
| 1:17.3 | And we refer to the pathos from the same prefix where we get the pathology, the way in which we're wired. |
| 1:25.8 | And this goes outside of our reason and into some of the |
| 1:29.4 | emotional elements of the human being. And a person who is all logos and no pathos is called |
| 1:36.7 | a psychopath. And a person who is all pathos and no logos is called insufferable. But at the end of the day, nobody is all one. |
| 1:47.9 | We all have both components. And I'm not here to talk about human psychology directly. It's more |
| 1:55.5 | as it pertains to habits and behaviors as investors. that this is a tricky element because people have a |
| 2:06.5 | tendency to let one get in the way of the other. And unfortunately, in this case, it's very |
| 2:12.0 | rare that somebody's logic or reason is getting in the way of their emotions for the most part. It's the opposite. |
| 2:20.6 | And so we have to start here with just making sure we understand what the basic premises are. |
| 2:27.8 | I don't mind, first of all, as a human being, that there are all kinds of things in life that we have to hold |
| 2:33.5 | intention. And I don't mind as an investor or as an investment manager. In a wealth advisory |
