You often hear complaints about people with friends in high places being parachuted into safe parliamentary seats, but is that charge really fair?

Well, the think tank Demos has conducted some analysis to shed some light.

Here to talk through that, together with the other news this week,

are Sophie Gaston of Demos and Sky News political correspondent Lewis Goodall.

So Sophie, what did you find out?

So we have created a dataset where we've looked at all 650 MPs elected in the 2017 general election.

And we went through every single one of them one by one to see how many of them are actually local to their constituents.

And by local we mean that they were either born or went to school or lived for the

five years prior to being elected within 20 kilometres of their constituencies boundaries. And what we found

was that only about half of MPs in the UK are local to their constituencies. And even more

striking is that there's really considerable

differences between the parties. So Labour MPs are basically twice as likely to be local to their

constituencies than conservatives. And do you have a theory as to why that is?
