From a very young age, Andy Hopkins learned that seeing spirits wasn’t a gift—it was a burden he never asked for.
As a child, Andy wasn’t just aware of the unseen… he could see it. Dark shapes moved through the hallways of his home. Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed through the quiet nights, stopping just outside his bedroom door. Sleep became impossible as fear took hold, night after night, with one question repeating in his mind: What happens when the footsteps don’t stop walking?
Not every spirit Andy encountered was lost, curious, or harmless. Some felt intelligent. Some felt cruel. And some seemed determined to drive him from the only place that was supposed to be safe—his home.
Growing up with this ability meant learning too early that the spirit world isn’t made up of gentle watchers and lingering loved ones alone. There are darker presences as well—ones that feed on fear, confusion, and vulnerability.
Andy shares what it was like to grow up seeing spirits others couldn’t, the terrifying moments that still haunt him, and why having the ability to see the dead can sometimes feel more like a curse than a blessing.

| 0:19.2 | I mean, after a few years, well, a few years living there, my mom, she met another guy and we, he was a bit of a sleaze ball, to be quite honest. He liked to drink. He was quite a few years older than my mom. And he, he, he, a few years prior to meeting my mom, he'd had a stroke. So he kind of affected his brain a little bit. But he, he, he, a few years prior to to meet him on my mom, he'd had a stroke. |

| 0:41.3 | But he, I remember we used to call him Ratman because he just, he was sleazy. |
| 0:46.3 | He gave us the creeps and he, yeah, so after a little while he was, the house loved him because he was oppressive, he was negative, and while he was there, we were having a lot of activity. |

| 1:04.5 | And very much, I was about sort of nine or ten, you know, I wasn't a young boy anymore. |
| 1:10.1 | And I got to the point where I wouldn't dare go downstairs to the toilet. |

| 1:19.9 | You know, it got, it got to that point where I didn't, I couldn't, I couldn't get out of my bed. |
| 1:26.2 | You know, we had, anyway, I digress slightly. |
| 1:30.5 | This one night, he, then my mum and Ratman, they'd gone out to the pub, |
| 1:36.3 | and they came back maybe an hour or two later, |
| 1:40.0 | and I heard my mum crying from downstairs. |
| 1:42.1 | It kind of woke me up with her coming back in. |
| 1:44.6 | My brother was still downstairs. |
| 1:46.4 | My sister was in bed. |
| 1:48.7 | And I just, then about maybe a little while later, |
| 1:54.6 | I heard hammering on the door, |
