Summary
Catherine, David and Matt were live to discuss what the players had to say at the end of another media day affected by player protest action over prize money revenue and welfare issues.
How much of a feature was this action on media day? Would it help if the players were more specific about the welfare improvements they’re seeking? And where does this movement go from here?
Moving on to the tennis chat (16:20), we cover the challenges facing Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner as defending champions, how Novak Djokovic feels different to how he felt in Paris, the tough spot Alex de Minaur finds himself in, how life has changed for French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska, and much more.
We close by wrapping up the day’s tour results (47:15), including a first career title at last for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and a third Eastbourne title for Madison Keys.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the tennis podcast live from Wimbledon presented by Barclays, the official banking partner of Wimbledon. |
| 0:18.9 | Today has been Media Day here at SW19. Our bandwidth has been, |
| 0:24.8 | well speaking for myself, completely maxed out. It has been grossly oversimulating in kind of |
| 0:31.2 | the most fun possible way, hopping from room to room, trying to make the most of the precious |
| 0:36.8 | few minutes that the players, the top players, have offered up for pre-tournament media, |
| 0:41.8 | because that has kind of been the lead story of the day here today. |
| 0:45.2 | As we heard a couple of days ago, the protest action that started in Paris at the French Open a few weeks ago, |
| 0:51.6 | has continued here at Wimbledon and is set to continue throughout the first week of the tournament. |
| 0:57.2 | This is the top players or most of the top players, more on that to come, led by high-profile sports administrator Larry Scott. |
| 1:06.5 | They're all limiting their time spent with the media in order to impact the grand slams |
| 1:12.4 | and their high-paying rights holders, in particular. |
| 1:16.0 | And here, that would be the BBC and ESPN, most prominently, |
| 1:20.9 | to impact them in hopes of negotiating a higher share of revenues in player prize money, |
| 1:26.9 | as well as improved player welfare. |
| 1:29.0 | A reminder that Wimbledon announced a 20% increase in prize money for this year, their |
| 1:34.4 | highest ever year on year increase. But as a percentage of overall revenues, it falls short of |
| 1:41.0 | the 16% that the players were targeting. It's 14.4%, I believe, at the moment. |
| 1:47.6 | So they were targeting 16% for this year with a long-term goal of achieving 22% of tournament revenues going into player prize monies, |
| 1:57.2 | and that would be in line with what the tours are able to offer. |
| 2:02.2 | Matt, you probably attended the most top player press conferences today in the beautiful |
| 2:07.5 | air-conditioned media theatre here. How big a feature was this protest in how the day unfolded? |
| 2:17.6 | On the one hand, I would say, quite a big feature. |
