But Mr. Bennett does not feel the same sense of urgency.

He does not write Mr. Gardner back immediately.

He does not even tell the rest of the family the news.

He receives the letter and then goes on a nice long walk, away from the house, to think about it by himself.

Lizzie and Jane only hear about the letter because Hill, the housekeeper, asks about it.

This is the first direct speech we get from a long-born servant in the novel,

and the moment reminds us that the servants hear and know everything.
