I'm Gretchen Ruben and this is a little happier.

Early in my work life, I had a very stern and very wise boss

who said many things to me that I have never forgotten.

And I remember once, when we were in a rare moment

of having a more personal kind of conversation,

I said something to her about the fact that while Jamie and I

who were newly married at this point,

we definitely wanted to have children.

I was unsettled by seeing how much parenthood

seemed to change some of the people that I knew.

I was surprised and puzzled by how different they seemed

afterward.

I said this to her, but I have to say,

I didn't really think that she would quite understand

what I meant, but she gave me a long look and said,

remember, whatever you do, you will still be you.

And that reminder was very comforting to me then,

and I've thought of it at many times ever since.

It's so obvious, but nevertheless, I find it very reassuring

to remember whatever transition I'm going through,

whatever challenge I face, I will still be me.
