I came across this story when I was doing research

for my biography of John F. Kennedy,

and I've thought about it a lot ever since.

So when we think about Jacqueline Kennedy today,

we think of her as a very outstanding first lady.

But when JFK was first elected,

his advisors were not too sure.

They thought she was too sophisticated

with her couture clothes and her French

and her love for fine arts and antiques.

They weren't sure it was going to go

over well with the American public.

The first thing I'd like to do is have a catalog made

for the White House, with a description and a history

of every piece in every room and who gave it

so that they can learn history.
