I'm Gretchen Ruben and this is a little happier. It's funny what stays with you. Certain ideas and

things from back in my child's preschool days have made a very deep impression on me and there

was one thing they would tell the children that I thought was so wise and so useful because they

would tell them you get what you get and you don't get upset. And this is what they would say when

they were handing out cupcakes that had different colors of frosting or when they were handing out

different scarves and the children started thinking like, well, maybe I want that one or maybe

I'd rather have this color and they would just say, you get what you get and you don't get upset.

And I realized that in a lot of circumstances it's a very good thing to remember. And as a side

note, this is a good example of the fluency heuristic. The fluency heuristic I love, it's the idea

that if it's easier to say or think something, it seems like a more valuable idea. And so something

that is expressed in a rhyme seems more convincing than the same idea paraphrased in a non-rhyming phrase.

So you feel much more convinced by you get what you get and you don't get upset than you would if

a teacher told you, take what's given to you without a fuss. So I often find myself thinking,

well, you get what you get and you don't get upset. I'm Gretchen Rubin and I hope this makes your
