We draw our text from our upcoming Wednesday night, so why don't you turn to Matthew 5?

One of the favorite old stories I like, and whether it's true or not, I don't know, maybe it's a parable kind of story, but there was a foggy night out in the seas, and the captain of a big ship, you know, saw little faint light kind of off in the

distance. And, you know, he instructed his signalman, hey, go and contact that other ship by our

signal light, you know, kind of a Morse code signal light kind of thing. So he sent this message,

change your course 10 degrees to the north.

I know, didn't want to collide with some vessel or something. The reply came back, change your

course 10 degrees to the south. Well, the captain responded, I'm a captain of United States Navy

and you need to change your course 10 degrees to the north. They signaled to the other

little light off in the distance. The response, I'm a seaman first class. You change your course

10 degrees to the south. At this time, you know, the captain is furious and he instructed the signal

in reply. He said, I'm a battleship. You change your course 10 degrees to the north. The reply came back,

change your course 10 degrees to the south. I'm a lighthouse. Have you ever been stubborn and thinking

you're right? But that's not the lesson of this. What I do love is the idea, and many of us do,

there's something about a lighthouse that's kind of cool.

I don't know about you guys,

but when I see a lighthouse on the shoreline somewhere,

on the Oregon coast, or anywhere for that matter,

you know, a lighthouse sort of stands for something.

It's secure, it's stable, it's usually built on a solid rock,

even in the midst of a tumultuous sea.

But it's there, you know, to light people that are in distress and to let people know which way to go.

There's something about a lighthouse that's just kind of cool.
