Welcome to that's what she said. Conversations with interesting people from the world

exports music comedy and more. Talking about their lives, careers, successes and failures.

My name is Ryan O'Callaghan and my dilemmas. I live in two conservatives of the town.

0:25.6

Okay, so on the one hand, I'd say if you live in a neighborhood full of people who think that who

0:30.3

you are and who you love is wrong, then you should probably get the hell out of there. You don't have

0:34.4

to try to be a hero and change the minds of people who don't want you to be yourself. If it makes

0:39.2

you unhappy or unfulfilled or even unsafe, then you should definitely just go somewhere else where

0:44.1

people will love you for you. On the other hand, the work of changing minds is usually done

0:49.9

face to face. So when people's loved ones or neighbors or friends are gay, trans, Muslim,

0:55.5

refugee, immigrant or any other persecuted group, it forces them to actually try to connect

1:00.0

and find common ground, find mutual interest and find their shared humanity. So if you're there and

1:06.0

you show them that being gay isn't something to fear or hate or change, you could help move that

1:11.1

whole town into 2019. But don't consider it up to you. If you need to leave, let yourself go.

The commission has spoken.

My guess this week is Ryan O'Callaghan, former NFL player, now a speaker, activist and founder of

1:26.7

the Ryan O'Callaghan Foundation. He played at Cal, was drafted as a right tackle for the patriots,

1:31.9

and then eventually picked up by the chiefs where he played a couple seasons. But the stress of being

1:36.3

in the closet, addictions, injuries, it all became too much and his NFL career ended. We talk

1:41.6

about his new book, My Life on the Line, what it's really like to be a gay man in the NFL, the sudden

1:47.0

end of his long time friendship with Aaron Rogers, how close he came to killing himself and more.

1:52.5

Throughout the pod, I read some short excerpts from the book. I hope you enjoyed the conversation.
