Today on the podcast is a top NCAA runner, Liam Murphy!
Liam, a standout runner at Villanova, has left an indelible mark on the track and field record books. His most recent achievement includes shattering the indoor school record in the 5000 meters with a remarkable time of 13:21.20 during the 2023-24 season, surpassing Villanova's previous mark and coming within six-tenths of a second of the absolute school record that has stood for over 40 years. This accomplishment follows his stellar performances during the 2023 cross country season, where he claimed individual championships at both the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Notably, Liam earned All-America honors with a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships and was named the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. His exceptional track record includes being the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional cross country champion, achieving the fastest NCAA season 3000 meters in school history indoors, reaching the final of the 1500 meters at the NCAA Championships outdoors, and contributing to a school-record performance in the distance medley relay indoors.
Additionally, Liam set records at the BIG EAST Championships and Villanova Stadium in the 5000 meters outdoors and anchored a Penn Relays Championship of America title in the 4xMile relay. His versatility is evident in various championships, where he secured individual titles in the 3000 meters indoors and the 5000 meters outdoors, as well as playing key roles in conference champion relays. Currently ranking among the top in school history in multiple events, Liam's stellar collegiate career is complemented by his academic achievements, earning him two selections to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and recognition on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
In today's conversation, Liam goes through his story in the sport, how he's progressed over the years, what it will take to get to the next level in the NCAA, this past XC season, and his remarkable performance at NCAAs this year.
