Summary

Given the current events taking place in the Middle East it is important to assess the Levant—the land-bridge linking three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa). The Levant set the stage for some of the principal events in history, is the source of two great monotheistic religions, and supplied the foundations for a third. Thus, it is rightly described as the crossroads of world history. Levant, essentially the western rim of the Fertile Crescent, boasts Jerusalem as its epicenter. Jews, Christians and Muslims all hold their heritage in this region; however, the geographic significance is not held to be theologically significant to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. In this teaching edition of the Hank Unplugged podcast, Hank Hanegraaff investigates the historical significance of the Levant to Judaism, Christianity and Islam in order to better understand the events unfolding in the Middle East and ensure that Christians approach the unfolding events with a proper sense of biblical and historical literacy. 0:29.2	And I think it's a very important podcast in that as I was preparing to do this teaching edition of the Hank Unplug podcast, news broke
0:40.3	that the compound of one of the oldest churches in the world, I mean, this is a church of
0:52.3	incredible significance.
0:55.6	This church was hit by an Israeli air strike,
1:02.1	the church, the Greek Orthodox saint, Porfairns church in Gaza,
1:08.1	was at the time it was hit, sheltering displaced people.
1:12.7	I think that they pulled the Metropolitan out of the rubble.
1:16.1	I don't know all of the details,
1:18.4	but it does appear that at least a dozen people were killed in this particular incident.
1:25.1	This church, again, one of the oldest churches in the world, was built in and around
1:29.8	the 12th century. And I suppose this is relevant to this teaching edition of the Hank Unplugged
1:37.3	podcast, because today I want to talk about the Levant. I did a podcast with a good friend of mine, Ferris Abraham, who
1:48.2	was born in the West Bank, his wife was born in Gaza, the very hospital in Gaza that was
1:57.1	partially destroyed by the remains of a bomb that fell near it. And when we talked,
2:04.9	we were talking about an area that was important to them because that's where they had lived,
2:13.5	that's where they were born, but it was also an area important to the world.
2:19.4	In fact, Levant became the name of the ministry that he leads.
2:24.9	So today I want to talk about the Levant.
2:28.3	The Levant is the crossroads of world history.
2:34.0	That should underscore it pretty clearly as a very important spot on the globe.
