Michael received his BFA from the University of Kansas

and an MFA in painting from Indiana University.

Five years ago, Michael moved back to Kansas

to be closer to his dad.

This move kicked off a series of paintings about

his father, the house he grew up in and the ways that we activate the spaces we live in.

In this episode Michael shares his process, how he uses photography and invention to paint a band who really

doesn't want to sit still. As we discuss his large-scale paintings, Michael shares how he realized

he had to let go of rules that just weren't serving him anymore.

That led us into a conversation about accepting the responsibility of asserting one's voice.
