Summary

The DA presented five weeks of evidence in People v. Letecia Stauch in Colorado Springs. And while prosecutors secured a conviction in 2023, this case may have been compromised long before opening statements ever began. In April 2026, the Colorado Court of Appeals granted Letecia Stauch a new trial, pointing to a critical issue of juror bias. At the center of it all? A juror who was the father-in-law of a local prosecutor working within the same district attorney’s office that tried the case. Under Colorado law, that kind of relationship raises serious concerns about impartiality, and it’s exactly the type of issue that can unravel an entire verdict. So how did this happen? And why wasn’t it caught before the trial ever started? Join Margot as she breaks down what the appellate court actually decided, why juror bias is such a big deal legally, and what prosecutors are likely to do next… ⸻ 🎧Did you know you could listen to this episode ad-free? All right, everyone, I'm so sorry that I skipped last week. I was doing my annual tour, and I got really really distracted and I just had a really hard time

0:21.4

getting back online. But here I am. Now, today's episode is one that I didn't expect to have

0:27.6

to make because this case, the case that I'm talking about today, already had an ending. At least

0:33.1

that's what we thought. This is the case of Letitia Stalk. Remember her stepmom out of Colorado?

0:39.0

I released a two-part episode on the heinous murder that this woman committed.

0:42.7

And I released that back in September of 2022.

0:46.3

That's over three and a half years ago.

0:49.0

Well, guess what?

0:50.3

After the verdict and after the sentence, Letitia appealed.

0:54.0

Of course, you know, we always expect that

0:56.2

defendants are going to appeal. But what I didn't expect was for her appeal to succeed, but it did.

1:03.1

And it succeeded not because there was additional evidence or a new suspect or a new anything.

1:09.1

She was successful because of a perceived juror bias. And because of that,

1:14.5

her conviction has been completely undone, wiped away, reversed. And once you understand what

1:20.6

happened here, you're going to see trials in a completely different light and you'll begin to

1:25.6

understand how a case can be won and

1:28.4

lost before opening statements even begin, because the integrity of a trial can hinge on a

1:33.8

single decision.

1:35.4

If you want to re-listen to my episodes on Letitia Stalk, both Part 1 and Part 2, I am going

1:40.7

to link them in the show notes, so be sure you check them out there.
