Well, this week's series of podcasts has turned out rather differently from what I expected when we began.

0:13.0

I was actually anticipating reflecting with you in some of my favourite hymns, but we've ended up thinking and talking just about singing itself,

0:23.8

not about specific Psalms or hymns or spiritual songs that we love to sing.

0:30.4

Yesterday I said that secular songs have a horizontal direction. We sing about ourselves,

0:36.7

or what's around us, or we sing to each other,

0:39.8

and there's nothing wrong with that. But there's a whole missing dimension. And by contrast,

0:46.3

even when a Christian sings in a horizontal direction, even sings the very same songs, there's

0:53.7

always a vertical direction. And the reason is,

0:57.0

as I said, because we live before the face of God and in His presence. We know that when

1:03.7

we are singing, He's listening. When we are singing, we're singing to Him and about Him,

1:10.5

or for Him, or in his presence.

1:13.2

So all of the Christians singing is different.

1:17.4

And when we sing specifically Christian praise, Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, it's very

1:24.5

different.

1:25.9

I said yesterday I'd say a little more about this today.

1:29.8

I was actually thinking about Paul's words in Colossians chapter 3 verse 16.

1:35.2

It's one of the most important New Testament verses about singing, isn't it?

1:39.6

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

1:46.0

singing Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your heart to God.

1:53.0

There's a whole theology of singing in this verse.

1:57.0

And since it's Friday today, I hope you'll reflect on it not only today, but also tomorrow

2:03.4

and as you go to worship on Sunday.
