So today, we're going to talk about Trump believing Schumer shutdown threat or not.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is threatening to shut down the government if Republicans play along with Trump's rescission plans.

Trump wants to take back almost $10 billion in funding for aid and NPR and PBS.

He wants to bypass the normal appropriations process in a maneuver similar to the budget reconciliation process.

That would allow them to avoid a filibuster.

Schumer said, quote,

If Republicans cave to Donald Trump and gut these investments agreed to by both parties,

that would be an affront, a huge affront, to the bipartisan appropriations

process. He then added plainly, it is absurd to expect Democrats to play along with funding the

government if Republicans are just going to renege on a bipartisan agreement by concocting rescission's packages behind

closed doors that can pass with only their votes, not the customary 60 votes required

in the appropriation process.

So here's the real state of play on this.

The Republican Party can do this on party lines right now.

However, at the end of September, they will need Democratic votes to pass appropriations.

Schumer is indicating that there's no reason to play along with an appropriations process if the Republican Party is going

to gut it afterward. And well, he's right. If they do this, it becomes clear that the Republican

party is intent on subverting the budget Americans voted for and simply doing whatever Trump tells them to.

The Republicans spin on this is that the Democrats don't want to work on bipartisan funding.
