So today, we're going to talk about the end to the Jack Smith era.

Special Counsel Jack Smith is now former Special Counsel Jack Smith.

According to a filing, quote,

The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025,

and separated from the department on January 10.

The move was expected in advance of Trump's inauguration, in no small part to Trump saying he would fire him in about two seconds.

Smith started his special counsel on November 18th, 2022, and served until Friday.

He oversaw two sprawling investigations looking at Trump's alleged involvement in January 6th

and his alleged mishandling of classified documents. The investigations led to two unsuccessful

prosecutions of Trump on dozens of counts. The prosecutions were ended after Trump was elected

in the 2024 elections. The special counsel report referenced in the filing is likely to be the subject of

legal battles in the coming days, weeks, and months. While it's referenced as one report,

it's divided into two volumes and really should be treated as two separate reports, one dealing

with each investigation.

Because of allegations against co-defendants in the classified documents case, it will likely

remain confidential for quite some time, and only those with a need to know, like some lawmakers,

will see it. This is to protect the presumption of innocence of the co-defendants.

DOJ's current position is that it will withhold that volume as long as there is a chance

of further proceedings against the co-defendants.

The other volume, dealing with January 6th, is currently expected to be

released at some point in the near future. But there are still anticipated legal battles over that.
